Al and Digital Competency Strategy

Overview

Recognising the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on society and knowledge creation, EdUHK has formulated the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Competency Strategy (the Strategy), a three-year blueprint for sustainable development. The Strategy encompasses talent cultivation, enhancement of AI and digital literacy among staff, and innovation in AI for education, aiming to deliver landmark outcomes distinctive to EdUHK.

Following a learner-centred approach, the overarching aim of the Strategy is to leverage AI as a transformative force to cultivate a future-ready learning ecosystem with the following objectives.

    • To cultivate students as self-regulated, self-directed and lifelong learners who effectively leverage AI to foster their intellectual and personal growth and develop global competency;
    • To promote AI-powered authentic learning experiences for students that foster professional excellence and enhance student employability;
    • To build academic and teaching staff capacity through professional development that enhances AI and digital competency, promotes pedagogical innovation, and supports effective curriculum and assessment design;
    • To drive education innovation and productivity by strategically developing and deploying signature AI tools for both students and academic and teaching staff;
    • To embed ethics and integrity as foundational principles in all AI-augmented academic and professional practices with an emphasis on social responsibility.

The Strategy aims to ensure that our academic programmes facilitate student development in alignment with EdUHK’s core values and our graduate attributes framework, namely “PEER & I”, which encompasses professionalism, innovation, ethical responsibility, societal caring, and global competency. Guided by the Strategy, the University will work towards clear and measurable milestones in the following three domains for the 2025–2028 triennium (Figure 1).

Digital Competency Curriculum for Students

Digital competency is now a prerequisite for many jobs. To enhance students’ employability and familiarity with digital skills, the LTTC offers credit-bearing courses in digital competency, including AI Literacy, Digital Literacy, Exploring Real-Life AI Application Development, the advanced and elite Capstone Project Pathways in AI and Emerging Technologies, and Learning Experience Outside the Classroom (CLOC) Course titled “Self-Regulated Learning in Artificial Intelligence with Chatbot”. Students are expected to attend the relevant courses based on their programme requirements and personal interests. The LTTC will issue e-badges to recognise students’ achievements in digital competency.
